New Landfill sites difficult
to find
Our traditional approach has been the landfill, a cheap solution
to an ugly
problem. But landfills have proliferated to become unwelcome
neighbors. As
existing sites are filled, new sites become increasingly difficult
to obtain. Today
solid waste from Georgia is finding its way to Ohio because
of the shortage of
new landfill sites.

Risk of groundwater contamination
We’ve learned our lessons about ground water contamination,
outgassing and plastics that don’t decompose over a
reasonable
time, landfill standards have tightened, dramatically increasing
their cost. In just
two years, from 1986 to 1988, average landfill tipping fees
doubled, approaching
$100/ton in some Eastern states.
